It’s always a joy to see these guys. Tricky to photograph, they pop to the surface to take a breath and then they’re gone again.
Mounts Bay in Cornwall is such a special place for them. Studies have shown the ratio of calfs to adults is one of, if not the, highest in the world. They are however under immense pressure from both pollution and intensive fishing. They live on a knife edge having to feed almost continuously day and night. The reduction of fish stocks mean the pressure on them is increased even more. By catch is also a huge issue, some of the fishing methods employed in and around our waters mean that many hundreds, if not thousands, die needlessly every year.
Because they are not as charismatic or photogenic as their dolphin cousins they often get overlooked.
