It’s that time of year when some of our marine wildlife is really going to need a little help from their friends, it’s seal pupping time!
We are blessed to see Atlantic Grey Seals around our Cornish coast, but these guys don’t have an easy existence. They are under threat from pollution, entanglement from lost and discarded fishing gear and disturbance by human activity.
We as humans have such an impact on them and their environment it’s important we know, what we can do to help them out, at this, their most vulnerable time.
Here are some guidelines from Cornwall Seal Group Research Trust
What do you do if you find a seal pup
- Please STOP
- DON’T approach, touch and NEVER put a seal back in the sea
- Take one minute to LOOK and spot injuries
- BACK OFF out of sight of the pup and its mum in the sea
- LOOK for 30 minutes to see if mum is offshore
- NO mum or there are any signs of injury to the pup
- Please ring the BDMLR hotline 01825 765546
- BDMLR with send a trained Marine Mammal Medic to asses the pups situation before deciding on the best course of action
